Why is it that so many people offering CARS on ebay find it necessary to label them as VHTF or HTF, and the prices for them seem to reflect this status? I have seen many for sale in local stores on the east coast so I find it funny that they would be labeled like this. Any thoughts?

Jeff,
I have noticed a lot of that, too.
"Rare" seems to get tossed around a lot, even when there are a number of auctions going for the exact same item. If there are more than 5 or 10 of them up for auction concurrently, I don't think of them as "Rare."
Same for "Original", but in a different context. I see a number of ebay auctions for Supercharged or World of Cars or RaceORama that are labeled "Original Series" when the character is actually one of the 12 (or 16 depending on how you look at it) that were first issued in the real original series: Desert Back.
When I see auctions that are mislabeled like this, I just ignore them. Most buyers seem to do the same and if a piece is overpriced, it generally won't sell. Not all sellers are really knowledgeable about what they offer so it is to be expected that some stuff will be improperly identified and/or overpriced.
I am still working on my goal of having a full set of Desert back characters as the centerpiece of my Cars collection and display so I am looking at a lot of auctions these days. I have learned to spot a fair offering.

Exactly, by doing that, they are trying to command a higher price for those items. So the responsibility is on the buyer to know whether it is actually hard to find or not.
Keep in mind though, that what is common in one area, may be rare in another.
